A New Frontier
I grew up reading lots of science fiction books from authors like Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Larry Niven. I loved Star Wars and science fiction television shows, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Farscape, and Babylon 5. Anytime a new science fiction show comes on television, I’m sitting in front of my set watching all the fascinating characters and all the places they traveled to. It was a childhood fantasy of mine to go to the planets in all these stories and see everything for myself, to have some of the adventures that the characters were having, and be someplace other than earth. It took me a while, but last spring I finally published my own futuristic romance series called A New Frontier.
In 2006, Stephen Hawking stated that humanity faces two options: either we colonize space within the next two hundred years and build residential units on other planets, or we will face the prospect of long term extinction. NASA has as its ultimate goal, space colonization. With this in mind, I have created my new series involving a group of people who are leaving earth to colonize a new world.
In my series, faster than light (FTL) travel is possible and it will take nearly a year for my colony ships to reach their destination. When the story begins, it’s the holiday season and the colonists are making final preparations for their upcoming launch in March. Part of those preparations include, setting their affairs in order and saying farewell to friends and family. Most of the colonists will never return to earth.
The story focuses on one of the ship’s engineers and his girlfriend who is a botanist. My novella, THE LAST CHRISTMAS ON EARTH, asks the question, what would you do if you had to choose between your lifelong dream and the one you love?
The story continues in the first Book of the series, A SCATTERING OF SEEDS. The Starship Halcyon has left earth heading for its new home but there are people who don’t want it to reach its destination. How can you protect the people you love when you’re flying blind in a large tin can in outer space?
